Spike Lee is in early talks to direct Spinning Gold, a biopic centering on the life of Casablanca Records founder Neil Bogart. Wereported in May that Justin Timberlake is starring as the music executive.

After growing up as a poor kid in Brooklyn, Neil Bogart ounded Casablanca Records in 1974, discovering legendary artists such as KISS, Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, Gladys Knight, Parliament, Donna Summer and The Village People, just to name a few. He passed away from cancer in 1982 at the age of 41. Actor Paul Sand played a record executive loosely based on Neil Bogart in the 1980 filmCan't Stop the Music, which also starredBruce Jenner and Steve Guttenberg, and centered around the formation of The Village People.

Neil Bogart's son Timothy Scott Bogart wrote the screenplay, and will also produce alongsideLaurence Mark, Gary A. Randall, Mark Damon and Justin Timberlake. Our report from May revealed that Sony Pictures Worldwide Distribution is distributing the film in select foreign markets, with Foresight Unlimited selling the project to other territories at the American Film Market.

Spike Lee's next film, Oldboy, hits theaters November 27.
