Early today, it was reported that Warner Bros. is courting Christopher Nolan for their upcoming adaptation of Ready Player One. According to AICN, he's not the only big name genre director in the mix. Also being eyed for the project by the studio areRobert Zemeckis, Peter Jackson, Edgar Wright and Matthew Vaughn.
The choices are quite fitting, as much of their previous work is mentioned or featured in the original Ernest Cline novel. The story follows a teenager named Wade Watts, who becomes immersed in a virtual reality world known as Oasis that enables users to live out their dream lives. When the game's creator suddenly dies, Wade enters an elaborate treasure hunt, where the winner will take control of the entire company. The teenager finds himself up against corporate entities who will do anything to take over the company. Many pop culture references, especially from the 80s, make an appearance in the book. Even the DeLorean time machine from Robert Zemeckis's 1985 classic Back to The Future is featured heavily.
While Christopher Nolan seemed to be the odds on favorite, this latest report claims that Robert Zemeckis is the one the studio really wants to lock down. Quite a lot ofRobert Zemeckis' past work is referenced in the book, and this is as close to a Back to the Future 4 as fans are likely to ever get. After looking at this impressive roster, who's your top choice?
Ready Player One comes to theaters in 2016.
